Big blow to AAP as Chadha, 6 more Rajya Sabha MPs quit, join BJP

In a dramatic political development that has sent shockwaves through Indian politics, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered a major setback after seven of its ten Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament resigned and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The high-profile exodus was led by senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha, once considered a close confidant of party chief Arvind Kejriwal. Along with Chadha, six other MPs—including prominent names such as Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal—formally switched allegiance to the BJP on April 24.

A Major Blow to AAP

The departure of such a large chunk of AAP’s Upper House representation—amounting to more than two-thirds of its Rajya Sabha MPs—marks one of the biggest internal ruptures in the party’s history.

Political observers say the timing is critical. AAP currently governs Punjab, its only state in power, and is gearing up for upcoming elections there. The sudden loss of key parliamentary figures is expected to weaken the party’s national standing and electoral momentum.

What Led to the Exit?

The mass resignation did not come out of nowhere. Reports indicate that tensions had been brewing within AAP for weeks. Chadha had reportedly been sidelined within the party, including being removed from a leadership role in the Rajya Sabha.

In public statements, Chadha suggested that the party had drifted away from its founding principles, positioning his move as ideological rather than opportunistic. Some defecting leaders also praised the BJP’s leadership, signaling alignment with its governance approach.

AAP Cries Foul

AAP leadership has reacted sharply, calling the move a betrayal of the party and its voters—especially in Punjab. Senior leaders have also hinted at legal action, including seeking disqualification of the defecting MPs.

Additionally, party representatives have accused the BJP of engineering the defections through pressure tactics and central agencies—allegations that the BJP has denied.

BJP Gains Strength in Rajya Sabha

For the BJP, the development is a significant strategic gain. The addition of seven MPs has boosted its strength in the Rajya Sabha to 113 seats, while the broader National Democratic Alliance (NDA) tally has climbed further.

This improved position could enhance the ruling coalition’s ability to pass key legislation in the Upper House, where numbers have often been a challenge.

Wider Political Implications

The episode highlights ongoing instability within AAP, which has seen several high-profile exits since its formation. Analysts believe the latest development could reshape political equations ahead of future elections, particularly in northern India.

At the same time, the BJP’s ability to attract opposition leaders underscores its continued dominance in national politics.

What Lies Ahead

With internal dissent now out in the open, AAP faces a critical test of leadership and unity. For Kejriwal and his party, rebuilding credibility and consolidating support—especially in Punjab—will be crucial in the months ahead.

Meanwhile, the BJP is likely to capitalize on its strengthened parliamentary position, both politically and legislatively, as India moves toward another high-stakes election cycle.
