A devastating airstrike in Afghanistan’s capital has left hundreds feared dead after a hospital in Kabul was hit late Monday, in what is being described as one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
According to Afghan officials, the strike targeted a large drug rehabilitation and mental health facility, causing massive destruction and loss of life. Early estimates suggest that more than 400 people may have been killed, with at least 250 others injured.
Witnesses reported hearing the roar of fighter jets followed by powerful explosions that shook large parts of the city. Emergency responders were seen pulling survivors from the rubble, while fires continued to burn through sections of the damaged building.
Conflicting Claims Over the Attack
Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration has strongly condemned the strike, calling it a “crime against humanity” and accusing Pakistan of deliberately targeting a civilian medical facility. Officials claimed the hospital was a critical center for treating drug addiction and mental health conditions, making the attack particularly alarming.
Pakistan, however, has firmly denied striking any civilian infrastructure. Authorities in Islamabad stated that their air operations were aimed solely at militant hideouts and terrorist infrastructure, not hospitals or civilian sites.
This sharp contradiction has made it difficult to independently verify the exact circumstances of the attack.
Rising Tensions Between Neighbours
The incident marks a serious escalation in tensions between the two neighboring countries, which have been locked in increasing cross-border clashes since late February 2026.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of harboring militant groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad says has carried out attacks inside its territory. Afghanistan has denied these allegations and, in turn, accuses Pakistan of violating its sovereignty through repeated airstrikes.
Just days before this incident, reports indicated fresh violence along the border, with casualties on both sides fueling a cycle of retaliation.
International Concern Grows
The scale of destruction in Kabul has sparked widespread international concern. Global organizations, including the United Nations, have called for restraint and urged both sides to prioritize the protection of civilians.
Humanitarian groups warn that continued escalation could further destabilize the region, already struggling with economic hardship, displacement, and limited access to healthcare.

In Kabul, the aftermath of the strike has left residents shaken. Videos circulating online show emergency crews working through the night, using flashlights to search for survivors amid collapsed walls and twisted metal.
For many, the attack is a grim reminder of how quickly the situation between Afghanistan and Pakistan has deteriorated—raising fears that the conflict could spiral further if diplomatic efforts fail.
