A powerful explosion struck the Jaffar Express near the Sultankot area close to the Sindh–Balochistan border on Tuesday, derailing multiple coaches of the Quetta-bound passenger train, CNN-News18 has reported.
According to initial reports, the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the tracks.
Rescue teams and security forces rushed to the scene to assist the injured and secure the area, while medical crews provided emergency treatment to passengers, the report said. Officials said an investigation is underway to determine who was behind the attack and how the explosives were planted.
Preliminary rescue updates confirmed several injuries, though the extent of casualties and damage is yet to be fully assessed.
Railway operations in the region have been suspended temporarily as authorities clear the wreckage and examine the site for further explosive material. Security agencies have cordoned off the area, citing the incident as another reminder of the persistent threats facing transport routes through the province.
The Jaffar Express has been repeatedly targeted in recent years.
In August 2025, an IED blast derailed six of its coaches in Mastung district, injuring several passengers.
Earlier, in March 2025, militants affiliated with the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) hijacked the train in Bolan Pass, holding over 400 passengers hostage in a tense standoff that ended after hours of firing and casualties on both sides.
Attacks by separatist outfits in Balochistan continue to grapple the region, raising serious concerns over passenger safety and regional stability.
