Mexican Navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge in New York, killing 2 and injuring 19

A Mexican Navy training vessel, the Cuauhtemoc, crashed into the historic Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, resulting in significant damage to the ship’s towering masts, killing two crew members and injuring 19 people onboard. The collision prompted an urgent search and rescue operation, with emergency teams rushing to help the passengers. Several of them were seen hanging from the ships’ rigging in a video footage.

Bridge collision hit masts of the ship

The Cuauhtemoc, a 150-foot-tall sailing ship, was built in Spain in 1982, and was trying to cross under the Brooklyn Bridge when its masts struck the underside of the structure. Videos circulating on the social media recorded the impact of the incident, showing the vessel’s sails and rigging caught under the bridge. Onlookers who were standing near South Street Seaport were seen fleeing as the ship approached.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that 19 people have suffered injuries, with four of them in serious condition. ”All injuries occurred onboard the ship,” he stated during a press briefing. Emergency personnel have transported the injured to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with the most critical cases sent to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment.

Journalist Collin Rugg shared on X: ”Just IN: Search and rescue operation is underway after a ship with 200 people onboard crashes into the Brooklyn Bridge.” The Cuauhtemoc was reportedly in New York.

The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883 and serves as a crucial link between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The bridge remains one of New York’s most heavily trafficked and famous landmarks.
