A projectile strike that hit a residential area in Al-Kharj, a city south of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, has sparked concern among expatriate communities in the region. However, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh has confirmed that no Indian citizens were killed in the incident, calling it a “matter of relief” amid initial confusion over casualties.
Embassy Clarifies Earlier Reports
The clarification came on Monday after early reports suggested that an Indian national might have been among those killed when the projectile struck a residential compound. The Indian Embassy quickly investigated the situation and later stated that no Indian fatalities had occurred in the attack.
In a statement posted on social media, the embassy said it was a “matter of relief that there has been no Indian fatality in the unfortunate incident at Al-Kharj.” Officials added that the mission is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with Saudi authorities.
One Indian Injured, Receiving Treatment
While no deaths among Indian nationals were reported, the embassy confirmed that one Indian citizen was injured in the incident. The injured individual is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital in Al-Kharj.
The embassy’s Community Welfare Counsellor visited the injured worker and assured him of all possible assistance. Authorities said the mission will continue to provide support and monitor the individual’s recovery.
Casualties and Damage
According to Saudi civil defence authorities, the projectile struck a residential compound housing workers from maintenance and cleaning companies. The attack resulted in the deaths of two foreign nationals and left several others injured.
Emergency teams rushed to the site shortly after the incident, conducting rescue operations and assessing structural damage to the buildings in the complex. Officials also reported material damage to the residential facility where the projectile landed.
Linked to Rising Regional Tensions
The strike occurred during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Since late February 2026, missile and drone attacks have been reported across several Gulf countries as part of a broader conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Military targets in Saudi Arabia have reportedly been among the intended objectives of some of these attacks, though civilian areas have occasionally been affected by falling projectiles or debris.
Concern for Expatriate Communities
Saudi Arabia hosts a large expatriate population, including millions of Indian workers employed across construction, services, and maintenance sectors. Incidents like the Al-Kharj strike have raised concerns about the safety of foreign nationals living in the region.
The Indian Embassy has assured citizens that it is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of the Indian community in Saudi Arabia.
Ongoing Monitoring
Officials said the embassy remains vigilant as the situation in the wider Middle East continues to evolve. Indian authorities have urged citizens in the region to stay alert, follow local advisories, and remain in contact with embassy helplines if needed.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, the embassy’s confirmation that no Indian lives were lost has brought a sense of relief to families and the wider Indian diaspora.
