Europe Signals Readiness to Take Defensive Steps Against Iran Amid Escalating Conflict

France, Germany and the United Kingdom have issued a rare and strongly worded statement warning that they stand ready to take defensive action against Iran if Tehran’s recent military actions continue to threaten their forces, civilians, or regional partners.

In a joint declaration released Sunday, the leaders of the three European powers condemned what they described as “indiscriminate and disproportionate” missile and drone strikes by Iran across the Middle East — attacks that have, in recent days, targeted countries not originally involved in a broader regional conflict.

“We are appalled by the reckless attacks launched by Iran against countries in the region,” the statement read, adding that continued attacks endanger not only civilians but also European service personnel stationed across the Gulf.

The leaders — French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer — made clear that while they remain committed to defending their interests and those of their allies, they also urge Tehran to stop its military operations and return to negotiations as soon as possible.

Defensive, Not Offensive — But Prepared to Act

Officials emphasized that any action taken would be defensive and proportionate, aimed at disrupting capabilities that pose immediate risk, such as missiles and drones, rather than initiating offensive warfare. This echoes similar rhetoric from UK ministers, who have repeatedly said that current British operations are focused on protecting personnel and allies in the region.

The UK, for its part, has already allowed the United States to use British military bases — notably RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus — as part of coordinated defensive operations, a move Prime Minister Starmer described as necessary to safeguard lives and deter further Iranian attacks.

Rising Tensions and Wider Impacts

The European alert comes amid a broader escalation that has drawn in the United States and Israel. In recent days, joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian targets triggered a powerful Iranian military response, firing missiles and drones toward multiple countries in the region.

Across the globe, reactions have been mixed. Many Western nations have backed efforts to curb Tehran’s military actions, while others — including Russia and China — have criticized strikes that killed top Iranian leaders as violations of international law.

At home, the British Foreign Office has begun planning for the possible evacuation of citizens from parts of the Middle East, warning that continued instability could threaten foreign nationals in the region.

Calls for Diplomacy

Despite the hard line on defence, world leaders continue to call for restraint and renewed diplomacy. European diplomats in particular have stressed that negotiations — not further military escalation — remain the best path to lasting stability in the Middle East.
