New Delhi — A quiet neighbourhood in Samaypur Badli was shaken early Wednesday when a pregnant woman and her three young daughters were found brutally murdered inside their home, police said. Authorities are now searching for the woman’s husband, who has been missing since the crime came to light and is considered the prime suspect.
The horrific discovery was made around 8 a.m. after neighbours became concerned when the family did not respond to knocks on their door. When relatives and police entered a ground-floor room in the Prem Chand Park area, they found the bodies of 27-year-old Anita and her daughters — aged three, four and five — lying in a pool of blood. All four victims had suffered deep cuts to the throat, with wounds so severe that their windpipes were reportedly cut. Investigators described the scene as “extremely brutal.”
Senior police officials said the husband and father, Munchun Kewat, a vegetable seller who worked at the famed Azadpur Mandi, has been untraceable since early Wednesday. Multiple police teams have been formed to locate him.
According to initial findings, Kewat may have intoxicated his wife and children before the attack, and a dispute the previous night is believed to have preceded the killings. While investigators are exploring several possible motives — including domestic discord and rumours of an extramarital relationship — no official cause has been confirmed. Some preliminary reports indicate that tensions over having only daughters and no son may have played a role, though police have cautioned that the motive remains under investigation.
Neighbours and relatives described the family as quiet and unassuming. A relative recounted that a young boy — a nephew of the couple — was the first to raise the alarm after seeing the bodies and crying for help early in the morning.
The victims’ bodies were taken to a mortuary for post-mortem examination, and the case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder. Police said they are combing through forensic evidence and witness accounts as part of the ongoing investigation.
Residents in the area remain stunned by the violence. “We never expected something like this here. They seemed like a normal family,” one neighbour said, visibly shaken. Authorities have urged anyone with information about Kewat’s whereabouts to come forward as the search continues.
