West Virginia Storm Update Severe Weather and Localized Flooding Possible on U.S. Route 60

Charleston, WV – West Virginia residents are waking up to gusty storms, loud thunder, and the threat of localized flooding as severe weather continues into Tuesday. Charleston and surrounding areas remain under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 6 a.m. Monday, with more rain and storms expected to follow throughout the day and overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, radar detected strong thunderstorms overnight with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. Locations impacted include Charleston, Logan, Clay, and parts of Boone and Kanawha counties. Drivers should avoid low-lying roadways like U.S. Route 60 and portions of I-64 as rainfall may cause water accumulation and reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during storms and avoid travel in flood-prone areas. Downed limbs, power outages, and ponding on roads are possible. If outside, seek shelter immediately. Frequent lightning can strike miles away from thunderclouds.

The week ahead stays unsettled:

  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 61°F, calmer conditions expected.
  • Wednesday: Rain chances return by evening, high near 80°F.
  • Thursday: Showers likely, cooler with a high near 82°F.
  • Friday: Showers and possible storms, high near 74°F.
  • Saturday: More rain likely, temperatures steady in the mid-70s.
